We have two kids under three and both my husband and I work full-time. Many posts talk about finding distraction free work spaces but our kids aren't old enough to play by themselves without supervision. They are also acting out a bit because they miss the daycare routine.

Any suggestions on how to balance work with keeping them alive? Anyone going through the same thing?

I understand that balancing work and parenting can be challenging, especially when your children are young and require constant supervision. Many parents have faced similar situations, and I can offer some suggestions to help you navigate this demanding phase:
  1. Establish a Flexible Schedule: If possible, discuss with your employer the possibility of adjusting your work schedule to accommodate your parenting responsibilities. This could include splitting your work hours with your partner, working outside traditional office hours, or negotiating flexible work arrangements.
  2. Create a Structured Routine: Establishing a consistent routine can provide a sense of stability for your children. Designate specific blocks of time for work, play, meals, and naps. By incorporating predictable activities into their day, children may feel more secure and be less likely to act out.
  3. Communicate with Your Employer: Open communication with your employer is essential. Discuss your current situation and explore options for temporary adjustments, such as reduced hours, modified deadlines, or flexible work arrangements. Many employers understand the challenges faced by working parents and may be willing to accommodate your needs.
  4. Leverage Nap Time and Bedtime: Utilize your children's nap time and bedtime as dedicated work periods. Plan your most critical tasks during these quiet periods to maximize productivity. This may require prioritizing and focusing on essential work when you have uninterrupted time.
  5. Engage in Independent Play: Encourage independent play by creating a safe and engaging play area for your children. Provide age-appropriate toys, books, and activities that can capture their attention and stimulate their imagination. Start with short periods of independent play and gradually increase the duration as they become more comfortable.
  6. Utilize Screen Time Moderately: While excessive screen time is generally discouraged, judiciously using educational and age-appropriate content can provide temporary relief and engagement for your children. Select quality educational apps, shows, or games that align with their developmental needs and screen time guidelines.
  7. Alternate Childcare Responsibilities: Coordinate with your partner to alternate childcare responsibilities throughout the day. This allows each of you to focus on work while ensuring your children receive adequate attention and supervision.
  8. Seek Support from Family and Friends: Reach out to trusted family members or close friends who may be able to help with childcare, even for short periods. This can provide you with dedicated work time and allow your children to spend time with loved ones.
  9. Communicate with Your Kids: Explain to your children in age-appropriate language that mommy and daddy need to work, but reassure them of your love and attention. Involve them in simple activities while you work, such as coloring, reading, or playing nearby. Regularly check in with them to offer encouragement and reassurance.
  10. Practice Self-Care: Remember to take care of yourself as well. Prioritize self-care activities, such as exercise, meditation, or hobbies, to reduce stress and maintain your well-being. By nurturing yourself, you'll be better equipped to handle the challenges of balancing work and parenting.
Remember, finding the right balance is an ongoing process, and it's okay to seek support when needed. Many parents are going through similar experiences, so reaching out to online parenting communities or support groups can provide valuable insights and a sense of solidarity.
